The completion of HMS Mersey has brought to an end to nearly 100 years of Royal Navy shipbuilding by VT (formerly Vosper Thornycroft) Group at its Woolston shipyard. The Offshore Patrol Vessel was the final RN ship to slide down the Woolston slipways before the yard is closed and VT re-locates to its new main shipbuilding facility in Portsmouth Naval Base. HMS Mersey is the third of an initial batch of three River Class Offshore Patrol Vessels built. - Paul Carter - 2003-09-17
