Surprise Valley, California Hot springs in the dry Lower Alkali Lake in Surprise Valley produce water at over 200 degrees, close to boiling, which then feeds streams into the lakebed surrounded by reeds and black-eyed susans. The area was sacred to native people for 15,000 years, including the Achumawi, Paiute and Modoc people. Surprise Valley is a high altitude desert valley with alkaline lakes. - David Bacon - 2013-08-13
