Horsmonden Horse Fair, is held in the hop growing area in the Weald of Kent. Red Lee Smith, (black top) successfully persuades Gilbert Smith, the seller of the horse to reduce his asking price. This Charter Fair dates back over 400 years and is held on the second Sunday in September and in recent times it became an important event for the people picking hops as it became known as Hoppers Fair. The local authorities have restricted the Fair to the traditional area of the village green, known as the Heath and for a few hours it becomes an important social event for the Gypsy and Traveller communities who can meet up with family and friends. There are some spectacular horses bought and sold, using the method of agreeing the price with a slap of the hand though few horses are sold with passports as required by law. - David Mansell - 2015-09-13
