Fons Americanus fountain by Kara Walker, Turbine Hall, Tate Modern. Installation by black American artist Kara Walker is loosely based on the Victoria monument outside Buckinham Palace. It is a poweful inversion of the tradition of monumental sculpture in Britain, which usually glorifies colonial history and Empire. Instead Walker examines the reality of British history which, in the last 300 years was to a large extent based on slavery and the exploitation of other peoples on a huge scale. - Martin Mayer - 2019-10-03
