Salton Sea

Coachella Valley California, USA The Salton Sea, an artificial sea below sea level created in the desert between the Coachella and Imperial Valleys by the accidental diversion of the Colorado River. Today it is a sanctuary on the migratory route of many birds. As the sea dries and recedes, it exposes dust and dead fish, causing respiratory difficulties for children in the small farm worker towns at its edge. The sea is filled with agricultural runoff, carrying pesticides and fertilizer, which are also blown into the air as the sea dries. - David Bacon - 2017-04-04
