Rioting, The Bogside, Derry, 1981

Rioting, The Bogside, Derry, Northern Ireland 1981 after the death of IRA prisoner Bobby Sands on hunger strike. The IRA prisoner Bobby Sands started his hunger strike on 1st March and died 66 days later on the 5 May 1981. There were a total of ten hunger strikers who died in 1981, as it was a showdown between republican prisoners who wanted political status as prisoners and the refusal of the British. Their deaths resulted in rioting in nationalist areas of Northern Ireland in particular The Bogside in Derry, as seen by this hooded masked youth armed with a stone in one hand and a molotov cocktail, a petrol bomb in the other hand. - David Mansell - 1981-04-06
