Rioting, The Bogside, Derry, Northern Ireland 1981 after the death of IRA prisoner Bobby Sands on hunger strike. Young rioters have just stolen a local butchers van, they form part of a large group of rioters highjacking and setting vehicles on fire in the Bogside of Derry as part of the political unrest caused by the death of Bobby Sands. The IRA prisoner Bobby Sands started his hunger strike on 1st March and died 66 days later on the 5 May 1981. There were a total of ten hunger strikers who died in 1981, as it was a showdown between republican prisoners who wanted political status as prisoners and the refusal by the British. Their deaths resulted in serious rioting in the nationalist areas of Northern Ireland in particular the Bogside in Derry. - David Mansell - 1981-04-06
